We advocate for your rights, provide essential services, and build a vibrant graduate student community. With an annual budget of over $300,000, we manage everything from your health and dental coverage to social events and professional development opportunities.

We’re evolving! Starting in 2025, our board will include these key roles:

  • Chairperson
  • Director of Events and Communication
  • Director of EDI and Welfare
  • Director of External and Partnerships

  • Director of Internal and Strategic Management

Staffing Structure at NBCGSS

  • The 6 board members will be receiving an honorarium at minimum wage covering up to 30 hours per month.
  • 3 office admin positions to support the Board of Director demands and NBCGSS operations, totaling 30 hours per week.
  • All members are in touch with the Executive Director (ED) as the main staff reponsible for all operations.
NBCGSS Board of Directors’ Role Definitions (Full definitions in our policy manual)

Chairperson

The Chairperson is the public face of NBCGSS, speaking on behalf of the Society and graduate students, as well as being responsible for overseeing all communications from UNBC departments. This involves providing overall leadership and direction to the board, ensuring the society is moving in the right direction, and representing the society at high-level university functions. The Chairperson is responsible for the execution of Board decisions and serves as the primary spokesperson for the Society.

Director of Events and Communication

The Director of Events and Communication is responsible for organizing and executing all society events and managing the Society’s communications. This involves overseeing social media accounts and website content, developing and implementing communication strategies, and ensuring effective external communications to students. They are responsible for promoting student engagement and maintaining the Society’s public presence across all platforms.

Director of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) and Welfare

The Director of EDI and Welfare is responsible for ensuring equity, diversity, and inclusion in all Society operations. This involves liaising with UNBC EDI office, Women’s Center, and Pride Center, overseeing the Food Bank operations, and managing welfare initiatives. They are responsible for advocating for student well-being and applying an EDI lens to all society operations and programs.

Director of External Relations and Partnerships

The Director of External and Partnerships is responsible for the external affairs of the Society. This involves representing the Society at BCFS meetings and external events, developing and maintaining partnerships with external entities, and negotiating discounts and deals for society members. They are responsible for overseeing sponsorship and fundraising initiatives and maintaining relationships with external organizations.

Director of Indigenous Students’ Affairs

The Director of Indigenous Students’ Affairs shall: a. Collaborate with First Nations Center; b. Organize events representing Indigenous graduate students; c. Advocate for Indigenous graduate student needs; d. Develop partnerships with Indigenous organizations in Prince George; and e. Foster understanding between Indigenous and non-Indigenous students while upholding the UNBC motto, En cha huna (Carrier: Respecting all forms of life).

Director of Internal and Strategic Management

The Director of Internal and Strategic Management is responsible for overseeing financial operations and budgeting of the Society. This involves developing long-term strategic plans, managing relationships with university administration, and exploring revenue generation opportunities. They are responsible for ensuring the Society’s financial sustainability and operational effectiveness.

  3. Bio: Rebecca Vesuwe – Dedicated Leader & Strategic Thinker. I am a dedicated and results-driven researcher with experience in project management and strategic planning. My passion for collaboration and data-driven decision-making drives me to create impactful strategies that benefit both students and faculty.     I am Dr. Alireza Noory, a dedicated Ph.D. candidate in Natural Resources and Environmental Engineering at UNBC, with a robust academic background that includes a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering. My journey in academia has equipped me with valuable insights into both technical and managerial roles across various sectors.
    My experience includes serving as the Director at Large for the Northern British Columbia Graduate Students Society (NBCGSS), where I have actively contributed to enhancing student engagement and representation. I have successfully coordinated initiatives such as Students Week 2024 and 2025, collaborating with organizations like the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) to facilitate workshops that benefit students and also “Winter visions” photo festival.
    Throughout my academic career, I have demonstrated a commitment to effective communication and strategic planning. My role as a project manager for the Iranian two-way road safety protocol and my work at the Tehran Research and Planning Center have honed my skills in internal management and the development of strategic initiatives.
    I am passionate about fostering an inclusive academic environment that supports diverse voices. My vision for the Internal and Strategic Management position at NBCGSS is to create a collaborative framework that empowers students, enhances academic excellence, and promotes a vibrant community at UNBC. As an international student and a Master’s candidate in Applied Science in Engineering at UNBC, I know firsthand how important it is to feel welcomed, supported, and heard in our community. Through my role as the Food Bank Manager at NBCGSS, I’ve had the privilege of helping students access essential resources. My involvement as a graphic designer, event planner, and even logo designer with student organizations like the MSA and ACSA has also given me the chance to bring people together and celebrate our diverse backgrounds. If elected, my goal is to create a more inclusive and supportive environment where every student feels valued.   3. Bio: Every successful event starts with a vision and a commitment to bringing people together. My experience in event planning, financial management, and student engagement has allowed me to turn ideas into memorable experiences. As the Director of Finance for the Bangladesh Student Association at UNBC, I managed budgets and supported student-led initiatives that strengthened our community. Previously, as Finance Director for Budget Olympiad 2019, I played a key role in organizing a large-scale event with 700 participants, raising funds, and ensuring its smooth execution. My leadership as Secretary of Administrative Operations at the Royal Economics Club, NSTU, further sharpened my ability to coordinate events and foster collaboration.
    As Director of Events and Communications, I will bring fresh ideas and a structured approach to student engagement. My focus will be on organizing dynamic, inclusive events, improving communication between students and leadership, and ensuring that every student has opportunities to connect, grow, and thrive. Whether it’s professional networking events, cultural celebrations, or student-led discussions, I will work to make campus life more vibrant and meaningful.

  1. Full Name: Mehrdad Mohammadifar
  2. Position Running For: Director of External Relations and Partnerships
  3. Bio: Mehrdad Mohammadifar is a first-year PhD student in the Natural Resources and Environmental Studies (NRES) program and holds a Master’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering. Throughout his academic journey, he has consistently been a top-ranking student, demonstrating a strong commitment to excellence. He also has several years of professional experience as an engineer in major infrastructure projects, including dams, bridges, and metro systems in international companies.
    Mehrdad has always maintained a strong connection with both academia and industry, recognizing the importance of bridging the gap between research and real-world applications. He is passionate about collaborating with both sectors simultaneously to address industry challenges through academic research.
    His involvement in large-scale engineering projects and academic environments has strengthened his discipline, communication skills, leadership qualities, and ability to collaborate effectively. Additionally, he is eager to leverage his experience to make a meaningful impact within the Graduate Student Society, fostering effective networking and external communications.

  1. Full Name: Alana LaMalice
  2. Position Running For: Director of Indigenous Students’ Affairs
  3. Bio: Alana LaMalice is a mother to one daughter, one ceremonial daughter, and is of Dene, Gwich’in, Nēhiyawēwin, and Denesuliné descent. She is a member of the K’atl’odeeche First Nation (NT), Treaty 8 Territory. Alana holds a Bachelor of Social Work degree and is a Registered Social Worker. She is pursuing her Master of Social Work degree at the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) and is on her thesis journey in Calgary, Alberta.
    As a part-time Community-based Research Lead for the Dehcho Protected Areas Communities (DPAC) in collaboration with Wilfrid Laurier University and Dehcho First Nations, she is vital in enhancing research processes to benefit Indigenous communities. Her primary focus is ensuring effective outcomes for the Edéhzhíe Learnings Project, collaborating with fellow leads to facilitate data collection and support research ethics training. This position reflects her commitment to community engagement and advocacy for Indigenous issues.
    Alana‘s experience working in governance is as follows:

    · Chairperson for the Fraser Region Aboriginal Friendship Centre Association (FRAFCA) AGM on 07/24, Kwantlen First Nation BC, Cultural Centre—Long House.
    · Co-Chair for the Dehcho 30th Annual Assembly, 09/24/24 Łı́ı́dlı̨ı̨ Kų́ę́ First Nation, NT.

    Alana recognizes the significant negative impacts of colonization throughout history and is aware of the current challenges Indigenous communities face within academic institutions. She has advocated for the installation of Indigenous artwork in the UNBC counselling office and aims to expand these installations across the campus.
    As a potential Director of Indigenous Students’ Affairs, one of her goals is to push for increased emergency funding and scholarships for Indigenous students, separate from those provided by NUGS, FNC, and the graduate society. Alana is passionate about building strong relationships and collaborating with the NBCGSS Chair and fellow Directors. Together, they will engage in ongoing strategic planning to implement the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s (TRC) Calls to Action. She understands the importance of working with best practices rooted in Indigenous principles and approaching academia ‘in a good way.’
